Cockroaches are associated with the transmission of dysentery, typhoid, poliomyelitis, gastroenteritis, and many other illnesses. Their shed skins and droppings also can trigger asthma, allergic reactions, and other respiratory problems, and they contaminate untold quantities of stored food with their dropping and secretions.
There are many species of cockroaches, but the two most commonly encountered as pests in Georgia are the German cockroach, and the larger American cockroach (sometimes incorrectly called "waterbugs" or "Palmetto bugs"). German cockroaches are more commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms, while American cockroaches are usually found in basements, under bathtubs, in crawl spaces, or in other damp, warm areas.
