Stored Product Pest Control
Stored product pests include those insects, mainly moths, beetles, and weevils, who feed upon and infest stored foods and textile products. There are many species of stored product pests, but only a dozen or so are significant pests in Georgia.
As with all the work that we do, we apply an Integrated Pest Management approach to the treatment of stored product pests. Our treatment guidelines for stored food pests (such as Indian Meal Moths, Flour Beetles, Sawtoothed Grain Beetles, etc.) includes:
- Inspecting and discarding infested products.
- Physically removing larvae and pupae from cabinets.
- Cleaning cabinets to remove spilled food.
- Storing foods in pest-proof containers.
- In most cases, using sticky traps or pheromone lures to trap remaining adult insects.
- Precision application of insecticides, only if needed.
The treatment guidelines for textile pests (such as clothing moths and carpet beetles) is similar to that for stored food pests:
- Inspect all stored clothes or textile products for signs of infestation.
- Wash, shampoo, dry clean, or thoroughly vacuum all textile products, as appropriate to the items.
- Remove any larval or pupal insects from closets, wooden trim, or other harborage areas.
- In most cases, use pheromone traps to quickly reduce adult insect populations.
- If needed, treat stationary textiles such as carpeting, as well as potential harborage areas for juvenile stages of insects, with a properly-labeled insecticide.
